Shell has manipulated oil spill investigations in Nigeria, with the company’s claims on oil pollution in the region deeply suspect and often untrue, said Amnesty International and the Centre for Environment, Human Rights and Development (CEHRD).

A small increase in natural gas flaring worldwide was detected in 2011, the most recent year for which statistics are compiled, and that increase concerns officials at a World Bank-led global partnership focused on the oilfield issue.

The 2011 increase of 2 billion cubic meters (bcm, 70 Bcf) of flared gas globally is a "warning sign," said the Global Gas Flaring Reduction (GGFR) partnership. Officials said Tuesday that the reversal was attributable principally to hydrocarbon production in Russia and from oil drilling in North Dakota's Bakken Shale.

ABUJA — The Federal Government, yesterday, said that gas flaring in the country has been reduced to 20 per cent over the last two years.
Mrs. Diezani Alison-Madueke, Minister of Petroleum Resources, who disclosed this at the plenary session of the 19th Nigerian Economic Summit in Abuja, stated that a further reduction is expected in the years ahead. She said the series of gas projects including the oncoming petrochemical and fertilizer plants would take up a bulk of the gas currently flared thereby reducing gas flare and the harm it does to the environment.

MEND to Chevron - Stop Oil Production By October or Face Our Wrath. THISDAY 5TH SEPTEMBER 2013

Yenagoa — The dreaded militant group, Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND) has given the nation's second largest oil producing company, Chevron Nigeria Limited till October 1, 2013 to evacuate the Escravos Terminal and Tank Farm or face imminent attack.

MEND, in a statement yesterday signed by its spokesperson, Jomo Gbomo, said from midnight of that day, it would begin mortar attack on the multi-billion dollar oil facility.

Lagos — Governor Babatunde Fashola of Lagos State, Tuesday gave a marching order to the Office of the Public Defender, OPD, to take legal action against the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps NSCDC, for allegedly arresting eight residents of Ejigbo Local Council Development Area LCDA, whose wells were found to have been polluted by oil spill from the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC pipeline in the area.
